International Swan Boat Races

Teams compete for prizes in the 21st annual swan boat races at the Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Craft Centre, 19 to 20 September.

Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre, Ayutthaya province, is worth visiting any time of the year, but it has a special fascination for visitors in September, when the riverside complex hosts the annual international swan boat races. Now in its 21st year, the dates were changed this year to 19 to 20 September moving back a week from its usual mid-month slot. But it still promises to be a tough, contested, series of races with nine international teams, mainly from around Asia, vying for the annual trophy.

Teams that have already confirmed their attendance include Penang Municipal Park Club Malaysia, Singapore Barbarian A, Singapore Barbarian B, Philippines National Dragon Boat Team, China Nanhai Zhonalian Dragon Boat Team, Dragon Boat and Boat Racing Federation of India and Thailand A, B, and C squads. Two teams surviving the knock-out races'll compete for the Prime Minister's Cup on the final day.

So what's the fascination for spectators who turn up in their thousands to enjoy the festive spirit and rivalry
For starters it is photogenic and amateur shutter bugs attend in the droves, determined to "catch the moment" in their fancy digital cameras equipped with enormous zoom lens.

Families dominate the spectator profile. They set out their mats on the banks of the river to enjoy a picnic lunch, or just lean back against the trunk of shady tree to watch the races.

They will witness the incredible enthusiasm and energy of the paddlers, who require considerable skill and teamwork to keep their boats stable enough to slice smoothly through the water at incredible speeds.

Swan boats defy the usual logic required to build race-fit craft. They are heavy and built to last. Their long, narrow, round-bottom hulls have high sweeping bows and sterns carved with the head and tail of a mythical swan.

There are actually two categories that able to be seen at the races.

The traditional version's hull is 29 metres long weighing 2268 kg and is often carved from a single trunk of a thakien tree. Manned by 50 paddlers and two helmsmen they are difficult to manoeuvre requiring exceptional navigational skills and team coordination to keep them on course.

International races use a modified version of the Swan boat, usually 15 metres long and powered by a team of 20 paddlers and a paddling helmsman, who uses a whistle to set the cadence rhythm, which can easily exceed 120 paddles a minute in the high temperature of a race.

The lighter craft weigh in at slightly over 900 kg. They usually race over a measured 650-metre course on rivers, but village races are often held on canals adjacent to temples.

Adding to the excitement, teams in the international races at Bang Sai face the swift flowing currents of the Chao Phaya River, in full flood.

Swan races are a traditional sport in Thailand and Southeast dating back 700 years. Youngsters race the boats during the rainy season on any accessible stretch of water in competitions that attract bigger crowds than seen at the country's football matches.

Linked to the Buddhist lent, the races continue through late September to the full moon celebrations in early October, when the three-month lent comes to a close.

Enthusiasts in Asia 'd like to see this authentic Asian sport in the Olympic and Asian Games. Until that happy day arrives, visit Bang Sai to experience a traditional sport that requires team spirit, endurance and precision completely of which guarantees unrivalled spectator appeal.

And for a bonus, hire a car and take the Michelin Map's green scenic route that follows the Chao Phaya River, just a couple of kilometres up Highway 347 from the junction with the Rangsit- Pathum Thani highway. You can make a interrupt at Wat Phai Lom, a refuge for migratory storks and follow the minor road that weaves under Highway 9 and brings you to Bang Sai's handcraft centre.

At the close of the races journey on for another 20 km to Ayutthaya to admire this World Heritage site in the evening as the temple and palace ruins are illuminated. It is the classic route for weekend cyclists who turn out in their hundreds to enjoy these quiet lanes. There are three-star hotels and riverside restaurants in Ayutthaya producing it an ideal stop on a tour northbound Thailand's heritage towns.

Race highlights:

# International Swan Boat Race: nine teams, each craft having 22 paddlers. The winning team will receive the Prime Minister's Cup.
# Thai Traditional Swan-boat Race: 12 teams, each with 55 paddlers. Paddlers come from various provinces around Thailand and compete for the Queen's Cup.
# Thai Traditional Swan-boat Race: 16 teams, each with 30 paddlers from four regions of Thailand, also competing for the Queen's Cup.
# Final rounds for each category will be contested 1600 to 1700, 20 September.

The 21st Thailand International Swan Boat Races will be held from 19 to 20 September at Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre, Ayutthaya province. Free admission. The event takes place from 0930 until 1700. Contact TAT Ayutthaya at 035 246 076 to 7

kanchanaburi travel...

Internationally famous The Bridge over the River Kwai was constructed by the Allied prisoners of war (POWs) as well as supervised by the Japanese army during WWII. The bridge was a section of the 'Death Railway' intended to link Thailand with Myanmar. Many Allied soldiers died due to the harsh conditions. The railway was never fully completed but is still in use today. Around town, there are numerous institutes erected to honor those who perished during the construction of the infamous bridge. The War Museum is located near the River Kwai Bridge and displays the collection of weapons, tools and utensils used by the Allied POWs and the Japanese during WWII. The JEATH War Museum, a collaboration among Japan, England, US, Australia, Thailand and Holland, resembles an Allied POW camp. The thatched huts contain bamboo bunks and memorabilia from the war. The peaceful and beautifully tended Kanchanaburi War Cemetery contains the remains of nearly 7,000 POWs who perished during the construction of the 'Death Railway'. The Chong Kai War Cemetery is located on the bank of the Kwai Noi River at the site of the former war camp. It is more peaceful, has a more scenic view and contains the tombstones of nearly 2,000 POWs.

The 7-tiered Erawan Waterfall, dropping through a series of cascades and shady rock pools, is regarded as one of Thailand's loveliest falls. It is located inside the lush forest of the Erawan National Park, the nearest park to the provincial capital. A pleasant, but strenuous 2-km hiking trail ascending beside the falls provides a challenging activity. A large limestone cavern, Tham Wang Badan, is situated on the west side of the park and contains many colorful stalactites and stalagmites. Camping facilities and trekking trails makes it easier to appreciate the local flora and fauna.

Sai Yok was the site of a large Japanese army barracks and POW labor camp during WWII. Nowadays, the Sai Yok National Park is renowned for its tranquil river scenery and impressive falls. The most fashionable attraction is Sai Yok Yai Waterfall where the water tumbles directly into the Kwai Noi River. The Sai Yok Noi Waterfall is closer and able to be reached by train from town. Simple park bungalows and houseboats are available for accomodations.

The Lawa Cave and Daowadung Cave are both situated beside the Kwai Noi River, accessible only by boat. The dark caves offer an exciting adventure and house numerous beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the world's smallest mammals, the 3-cm long bats.

Discovered by a Japanese soldier during WWII, the Hin Dat Hot Spring is a pond for bathing beside a stream. It is near the entrance of the Pha Tat Waterfall, a huge fall easily accessible by all, located north of the provincial town.

The Prasat Muang Sing Historical Park in Sai Yok District north of town is an ancient site on the banks of the Kwai Noi River. The main structure, the Khmer Prasat Muang Sing (Tower of the City of Lions) is believed to be the westernmost outpost of the Angkor-centered Khmer Empire. Temple carvings, religious statues and different artifacts indicate the city flourished during the 12th-14th centuries.

The main attraction of the isolated trading town of Sangkhla Buri is its serene lakeside location on the Thai-Myanmar border. The town is populated by Thais and Mon and Karen tribepeople. The northern shore is dominated by the uncommon chedis of Wat Wanwiwekaram. The daily market besides the temple sells interesting goods from Myanmar, Indonesia and other places early every morning. Slightly north of town is the infamous Three Pagoda Pass with 3 whitewashed chedis sitting right on the Myanmar border. During WWII, the Burma-Siam Railway passed through here. Nowadays, it exists as a trading and smuggling route between the Indian Ocean and mainland Southeast Asia. Visitors could usually obtain a one-day visa to visit the neighboring Burmese town.

Within town, the 2 adjacent temples of Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave) and Wat Tham Khao Noi (Small Hill) house beautiful Thai and Chinese style buildings and a huge Buddha image situated on the mount. Further upriver, Wat Tham Khao Pun overlooks the river and the Burma-Siam Railway. Within the temple grounds is a network of narrow passages that leads to a brightly lit cave system filled with Buddha images.

The beautiful and isolated Chalerm Rattanakosin National Park is one of the nation's smallest park. The main trail runs beside a stream which passes through the cavern Tham Than Lot Noi and emerges in a thickly forested, steeply sloped ravine. The path continues for 2,500 m, climbing steeply beside the Trai Trung Falls to another cavern, Tham Than Lot Yai, which contains a small Buddhist shrine.

The sixth Bhumibol Dam International Mountain Bike Championship...

Bikers brave the rough stuff

Mountain bikers gather at one of Thailand's most scenic dams for a series of races and fun activities.

Bumping over rough trails's not everyone's idea of having fun, but medical science appears to support the idea that riding your mountain bike over a boulder-strewn course is actually great for building bone density.

If you need an excuse to join the sixth Bhumibol Dam International Mountain Bike Championship, 29 to 30 August, that might be it. But it is more likely to be that the venue, for this fun event, is the scenic Bhumibol Dam, surrounded by forest-covered hills, in Sam Ngao district, Tak province.
This weekend of fun rides and essential competition is a firm fixture in Thailand's annual sports events calendar. It is remarkably fashionable because it focuses on mountain bikes as opposed to the most of cycle-related events that are either a triathlon with competitors using triathlon or time-trial bikes, or the tradition road races that favour super light road bikes.

Most leisure cyclists own a mountain bike so here is an opportunity to take the family on an interesting trip to Tak province, a destination that has a reputation for serving up superb soft-adventure options as well as a famous dam where you able to relax and enjoy nature.

Backing the event are the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Sports Authority of Thailand. Created to promote an interest in outdoor sports and encourage ecotourism at both national and international levels, the races underscore the beauty of a province that is not on the main tourist trail.

For numerous mountain bikers and their families this is the highlight of the year, a reunion of friends from both Thailand and overseas, who share a passion for mountain bikes. Participants of completely ages gather at the starting line on the crest of the spectacular Bhumibol Dam for two days of fun activities and serious races.

This scenic location give s a variety of race routes that'll both challenge the semi-pro mountain bike racers and also please recreational riders.

It is really up the participants as to how far they wish to push their bikes and bodies. If they want the thrill of descending steep slopes through jungle terrain, or the steady pace of a trail over rolling hills that border the reservoir, the organisers have a choice of categories to deliver the right experience.

There are six categories to choose from :

* Long distance 60 km;
* family 16 km
* tour biking 10 km
* cyclo-cross on the dam's crest, five km.
* international race 39 km.
* amateur 24 km.

Just to ensure all the hard physical activity is balanced with lots of fun, the organisers encourage visitors and participants to display vintage two wheelers in an "ancient bike contest". The line up is impressive with some participants showing off bikes that have serious historical value, while others are more exotic, possibly bordering on weird.

On the sidelines, folk music bands entertain to make a family atmosphere, while here are even handicraft stalls supplied by shops under the One Tambon, One Product project, a national initiative to support village handicrafts.

To round off the fun, bike shops attend to sell equipment at discount prices. All this is part of a fit experience for biking enthusiasts, who usually discover that they need to make just one more purchase to round off the beauty, or technical excellence, of their prized bikes.

Bhumibol Dam is located in Tak province, 426 km north of Bangkok, just off Highway 1.
The race site, at the crest of the dam, is 60 km north of Tak provincial town, where most of the hotel accommodation is located.

Baby panda joins celebrity list...

Thailand animal lovers celebrate birth of a panda at Chiang Mai Zoo.

This has to be the Southeast Asia’s most famous zoo after global TV networks turned their lens on a remarkable new born baby; a female panda born at Chiang Mai Zoo, late May.

Mum and Dad, Lin Hui and Xuang Xuang, have lived at the northern Thailand zoo for the last six years, under a loan agreement with the Chinese Government that lasts just 10 years.

TV cameras from all major channels focused on the tiny tot made all the more famous because it was conceived by artificial insemination and marked a first for the Thai veterinarian team. Thailand joins the US and Japan as the only countries to breed pandas in captivity.
Born 27 May, after six years of almost comical efforts to get the female panda pregnant, the birth surprised even zoo officials. It turned out to be the month’s good new story rising above the usual negative news that swamps TV viewers.

It was all the more fascinating in the context of past efforts by zoo officials to get the two Chinese pandas to mate naturally. Zoo keepers arranged a mock wedding and even showed them porn movies of other pandas mating. It was a dismal failure, until medical science came to the rescue.

Overnight, the baby was a world celebrity and the only sad note was news that within two years the baby panda would have to return to its homeland.

The panda family is the biggest draw at Chiang Mai Zoo, earning a treasure chest in gate fees that have reached an astronomical figure. You would have to be a football star to attract a fan club of the size the panda family has drawn to the zoo.

Tourists and residents flock to this northern zoo to watch these rare creatures in their posh quarters.

Leading the family’s admirers, Thailand’s Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjaijiva, says he will check out if China might be prepared to relax regulations and allow the baby to stay beyond the two years stated in the loan contract.
If successful, the baby could possibly remain with mum and dad until their stay in Thailand concludes in another four years.
While sensitive talks between PMs unfold the zoo is planning to celebrate the panda’s birth in style.
Thousands of visitors are expected to visit the zoo just to see this tiny tot a rare site for travellers interested in these cute and iconic creatures.
Since the grown-up pandas arrived, the zoo’s gate rose to around 3,000 visitors on a weekend. But there is a good deal more to see at this zoo. It is credited with being probably the best in the country and even has a night safari zoo.

There are various activities arranged by the zoo to attract visitors. This month, 12 to 21 June the zoo hosts the World Animal Art and Photo Gallery, that encourages visitors and residents to enter their favourite animal photos in a contest. They have to depict animals smiling, not an easy task if the subject is a crocodile. In addition, the zoo features a water colour painting workshop; rare animal photo auction, finger paint, photo fair and gallery.

Phuket Property , All abouth Land Titles in Thailand. Phuket Real Estate guide...

Understanding Land Titles:
True title deeds, "Chanot ti din", are only to be found in the most and longest developed parts of the Thailand, and of course in Bangkok. Chanot titles, issued by the Provincial office of the Thai Land Department, are accurately surveyed, plotted in relation to a national survey grid and also marked by unique numbered marker posts set in the ground.
Most "titles" in rural Thailand are however of the Nor. Sor. Sam or Nor Sor. Sam Kor. (N.S.3.) variety and are in the strictest interpretation "land exploration testimonial deeds". They are to all practical purposes land title deeds (issued and maintained by the Amphoer, the District land office) in as much as clear records of ownership are maintained, and that they may be sold, leased, used as mortgage collateral etc.
In the case of the Nor. Sor. Sam. but not the more recently issued Nor. Sor. Sam. Kor. there is however a requirement that 30 days public notice is necessary before any change of status over the land can be registered.
N.S.3. titles are in general less accurately surveyed than Chanot titles. In the case of the older (now increasingly rare N.S.3.) titles the boundaries are only recorded in relation to the neighboring plots and survey errors in length of boundary or area are not unusual.
The newer Nor. Sor. Sam. Kor. is in general much more accurately surveyed and each plot is cross referenced to a master survey of the area and a corresponding aerial photograph. For this reason whenever purchasing N.S.3. land which lacks clearly defined physical boundaries it is a wise precaution to ask the owner to stake out the boundaries and then ask neighboring land owners to confirm the vendors interpretation of the boundary.
The Chanot and the Nor. Sor. Sam. Kor. are the only titles over which register able right of ownership or lease can exist, and are as such the only ones that a prudent foreigner should consider.
Below the Chanot and N.S.3. title there are a host of other forms of land claim document such as the Sor. Kor. Nueng (S.K.1)., the Tor. Bor. Tor. Hoc. (T.B.T.6) and the Tor. Bor. Tor. Ha.(T.B.T.5.)

. These rights are essentially a form of squatter or settler's claim which has been filed with the district office and upon which a small fee has been paid. Unlike the Chanot and N.S.3.. it is neither possible to register a sale or lease over these land rights, nor will a bank accept them for collateral and most importantly one cannot apply for (or obtain approval to) build on such land.
In certain circumstances, based on the length of the claim and the use to which the land has been put, it is possible to upgrade these land claims (to N.S.3. or Chanot title). The steps involved in such an application and the number of government departments required to approve such an application (where such approval is often discretionary) is however quite daunting and most definitely not recommended to anyone without the best of connections at the district, provincial and (in many cases) national level.
The newer Sor. Bor Kor. titles are very different to the above claims. These are true title deeds, accurately surveyed and pegged (like a Chanot). They may be mortgaged, planning permission for development may be sought and granted. The one significant thing that may not happen with a Sor. Bor Kor, is that it may not be sold or transferred (except under last will and testament). Many expect that this limitation will change in time or that the titles can be quickly upgraded to a full Chanot. This is not a universal interpretation of the intention of the new titles and it may be unlikely that any upgrading will granted in the near future.

Why Hire A Car in Thailand...

For most people, a trip to Thailand is a once in a lifetime experience. Many tourists arrive into the main airport and travel onward via plane to either Phuket in the south or Koh Samui. Why not make the most of this once in a lifetime trip and plan a fly drive holiday?

Spend your fist few nights in downtown Bangkok getting accustomed to the language and culture. Don't let the busy traffic put you off. Once you leave Bangkok the roads are good and there are signs posted in English. Do buy a map before leaving Bangkok as it's difficult to find one outside the city of Bangkok.

Car Hire Thailand Tip: Most car rental companies in Bangkok and other Thailand tourist locations offer free delivery to and collection from your hotel.

Just a few hours drive from Bangkok in a southerly direction is the charming fishing village of Hua Hin , Hua Hin offers a host of spa resorts and golf courses. Don't be surprised to see a few famous people as some spa resorts are very exclusive.

Car Hire Thailand Tip: rental cars are strictly not allowed outside the borders of Thailand and if taken outside all insurance will be null and void.

Spend a few nights in Hua Hin and move further south and visit Koh Samui or Phuket or both. If your rental is over 3 days you can just ask to have your car collected from your final resort is the south of Thailand free of charge.

Car hire Thailand Tip: You may take your rental car on a Ferry to the Islands but this must be arranged with the ferry company and rental company in advance, the ferry company will ask for car registration so you need to book your car rental first.

Even though its beaches are not as excellent as the beaches of Samui and Phuket, visitors visit the location for its active nightlife. For tourists who want to have a great night party experience, the beer bars and other Pattaya nightlife places provide a lively environment for partygoers to try out. Moreover, Samui is another great place to find excellent beach areas. You may even want to try participating on several beach activities such as water sports and boat rides. The most popular beaches to discover in this region include Lamai Beach, Big Buddha Beach and Chaweng Beach.

Aside from the popular beaches of Thailand, you may also want to have an adventurous hike on the mountains of Chiang Mai. You may want to explore the culture of Thai tribes as well as participating in exciting events such as rafting and elephant riding. If you want to have a great time on your visit to Chiang Mai, make sure you schedule your travel with the Song Kran or Thailand’s New Year celebration.

cheap holidays in thailand...

Thailand's booming tourist economy, driven largely by Hollywood (the country has been the setting for The Man with the Golden Gun, The Bridge over River Kwai and most recently Alex Garland's The Beach) has resulted in the opening of a number of not cheap and luxurious international hotels. Those looking for the rustic splendour of the beaches and islands'll find plenty of not expensive and comfortable accommodation.

The size and geographical diversity of Thailand provides for a variety of activities. Snorkelling, diving and a host of watersports are favorite around the Islands, while inland enthusiasts able to trek into the mountains or cycle across the flat river areas of the northeast.

Thailand Regions, Provinces & Travel Destinations

Bangkok
Chaotic, carnal and congested, Thailand's capital is divided by the Chao Phraya River and is nestled in one of the world's most fertile rice-producing deltas. Bangkok's 579 square miles (1,500 sq km) are criss-crossed by a series of canals carrying passengers and cargo, its roads clotted with endless traffic jams, while the city sprawls in all directions with a hodgepodge of urban, commercial and industrial buildings. A new overland metropolitan railway speeds above the city, providing visitors with a relaxed and efficient way to observe the hustle and bustle below.

Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is Thailand's second largest city, and an excellent starting point for excursions into the northern territories. Its name means 'new city', although Chiang Mai is much older than Bangkok, built in 1296 under the rule of King Mengrai. While this city has many ancient temples, such as the one at Doi Suthep, which offers breathtaking views over the area, its popularity is largely due to the elephant treks in the surrounding countryside. Thai cookery classes are a popular tradition in the city. Chiang Mai also has an extensive night market, with dozens of street vendors selling a variety of traditional Thai wares that could be obtained at very low prices if you have the patience to bargain for them. The city is small enough to get around on a bicycle, has many attractions, and offers excellent accommodation, although tourists are advised that it can be difficult to find a room in peak season, between December and March.

The Coast
Lush, green forest vegetation extending down to limestone cliffs or pure white beaches, lapped by warm, turquoise waters. A tropical island paradise with spectacular waterfalls and coconut palms bending towards the sun. The tranquillity and natural splendour of the Thai coast and its islands belongs in the realm of fantasy.

Pepsi Thailand World Foot Volley Tournament .....

Footvolley comes to town

Here's a chance to look first hand in Bangkok how footie skills could apply to volley ball.

While it does not grab headlines in the sporting press, footvolley should stimulate your imagination as to its pedigree as well as origin. Now, courtesy of Pepsi Cola we can see for ourselves how this sporting spectacle compares with the traditional volley ball.

Proponents of the game point out that footvolley can be played by individuals of all ages, and was selected as a demonstration event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The first ever Pepsi Thailand World Foot Volley Tournament'll be played out in downtown Bangkok, 30 to 31 May, at the Central World's outdoor activity arena.
The competition will include teams from South America, Europe and Thailand.
According to the organisers, international football stars have been invited to attend the tournament to entertain the audience with a VIP demonstration match at the Outdoor Arena at Central World -- a mega shopping complex in the heart of Bangkok.
Organised by the Footvolley Association of Thailand (FVAT) the tournament will feature eight professional teams, with sides from Brazil, Spain, France and Portugal lining-up against four Thai squads. The event's sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de Footvolley (FIFV) and forms part of the Footvolley World Tour 2009.

These so called world championships have been held since 2004 starting in Brazil. Thai foot volley players participated in that tournament and the following year in Spain.

Footvolley was established on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro and has fast grown on to become a highly fashionable beach sport around the world. It was first introduced to Thailand 2003 and strangely gained its roots in Loei, a northern town surrounded by mountains and far from the Gulf of Thailand beach resorts.

Takraw in Thailand......

Takraw is played in various versions in most parts of Southeast Asia. But perhaps no where else is this startling game, in which players must neither touch the ball nor let it touch the ground, played with the enthusiasm and vigour shown by Thailand's star performers. Games are played in the courtyards of wats, at fairgrounds, and (particularly during the kite flying season when there is little or no rain) at the Pramane Grounds in Bangkok. The small and hollow rattan balls which are the essential-and sometimes only necessary equipment for a game are sold in rattan shops and sporting goods shops throughout the country.
While there are definite basic rules to takraw, the game varies according to the type of takraw being played as well as the place where it is played. In village games, for example, there is often no referee and no document is kept : the winning player is just the one who puts on the best show. The intricacy and speed with which it is played are astonishing, and if you think your reflexers are better than average, consider these methods of sending the ball aloft : the sole kick (using the arch or sole of the foot), the instep kick, knee kick, shin kick, shoulder kick, or head kick. Want to try the crosslegged jump kick? That consists of crossing your left leg over your right and leaping up to kick the ball with the instep of the left foot. Another version is the crosslegged knee kick. In this one the player crosses his left leg over his right above the right knee, and then leaps, into the air kicking the ball with his right knee.
The Sports Book (Hardcover)But that's not all. One able to use elbows, shoulders, even the posterior. The more complicated and moving your feats, the better your score (Or, if a score is not being kept, the better your audience's reaction : spectators could be demanding, if not downright ruthless, in their judgements).
One of the most difficult of all acts is seen in a game of hoop takraw, The player makes a hoop of his arms behind his back, and kicks the ball with his heels through the hoop in such a way that it passes through a hoop suspended in the air. (if you groan at the thought better not try it).
Hoop takraw seems to be the most fashionable version of takraw in Thailand. A team usually consists of seven players (there can be no less than six) who stand at the perimeter of a circle. During a 30 minute period, the players cooperate with every other to earn a high score. Hoops are suspended over the centre and the players must hit the ball through them. Successive teams try to surpass the previous score.
Net takraw is somewhat like badminton, in that it requires a net and a court. Lots are drawn beforehand to determine placement of the players and the first serve. Near the net, the ball is then tossed to a teammate in the middle of the court, who kicks it into the opposite camp. The game then proceeds at an incredible pace as the ball is returned instantaneously sometimes to great heights. Some players wear rubber plimsolls, while others are barefoot.
Net takraw is played in teh SEAP Games (now we call SEA Games) and other international competitons. The Thais introduced it to the SEAP Games while the Myanmar introduced the variation called imitation ring, where in a player takes a particular position to toss the ball and all other players must imitate that position.
Apart from net and hoop takraw, other variations are popular in Thailand. One of these is in-tossing takraw, which has far less rules to abide by : the point is simply to see how many times the ball can be hit aloft by the player. It is a means of training for a player. Some can hit the ball from positions which call for stooping or lying down. A good player should be able to keep the ball aloft for ten minutes, and if he is joined by others the group should manage to keep it in play for close to an hour. Naturally, this is a skill which only the most adept players can manage : they have trained arduously and are able to concentrate for a long period as well as to use their bodies dexterously.
Other variations of the game are : In-scoring takraw. Played with no nets or hoops, the ball rotates from player to player, and each is scored according to the skill displayed. After 30 minutes or 10 starting throws, the highest score determines the winner.
Big and small ring takraw, played by 7 or 5 players who stand in circles and are given points for style, consistency and retrieval of difficult balls.

Tours in Bangkok...

Ever wanted to do something a little bit different when your travel to a tropical holiday destination, well, Realasia.net offers just that. Established 10 years ago it is Bangkoks leading bike tour operator. The company is owned and operated by a Dutch national called Michiel who has been living and working in Thailand for many years, the benefit is that you are getting the best of both worlds, western quality and service combined with Thai culture.
So why would you want to ride around Bangkok on a bike? You can get right up close to the people and feel the culture that it offers. The tours start from different locations so each one has something a little bit different and so offers something for everyone. You are able to go to places typical tourists can’t. Klongs (canals) once earned Bangkok the title of the "Venice of the Orient." The tropical landscape and Thai style homes will shatter all Western illusions. These bicycle tours bring you to very small backstreets, alleys, markets, temples and even the small streets and houses below Bangkok highways. This gives a true picture of daily life for a lot of people in the city. While biking along the large network of elevated pathways over the Klongs, which are only just wide enough for bicycles and motorbikes, you will be able to discover the real Bangkok. These pathways put the crowded roadways of Bangkok far behind you.
After a nice trip by Klong (Canal) boat you will leave the metropolis part behind and continue your tour through an oasis of green landscape scattered by fruit plantations and typical Thai style houses. Here a few cars will be seen. No traffic jams, no hassle, no shopping malls, no air conditioning, no modern-day Bangkok life. As if you are in a remote village, people live in small houses, living from the products on their lands.
Tours are started at different times throughout the day, and run 365 days a year 7 days a week, even holidays.
While the most popular tours are biking, we also offer walking, train, and longtail boat tours. Each tour comes with an English speaking guide, refreshments, lunch and full insurance......

Koh Samui...

Koh Samui (à¡ÒÐÊÁØÂ in Thai language), the island of the coconut trees, is the third largest island in Thailand. (Only Phuket and Koh Chang are larger by size) The area is about 247 km^(2) and it is located 700 km South of Bangkok in the Surat Thani province.

Ko Samui or Koh Samui, a Thai island is located nearly 80kms off the eastern coast of Thailand. It is 700kms from Bangkok and is connected with the capital by air. The popularity of Ko Samui as an island resort took off not until recent times. However, ever since the first foreign visitor in 1972, Ko Samui has found a prominent place in the map of fashionable tourist destinations in Thailand. The history of Ko Samui would have been unknown to the world had it not been for the first foreign visitor who visited the island in 1972. Ever since that visit, Ko Samui has become a regular haunt for foreign tourists looking for a tropical vacation.
The history of Ko Samui is that of the fishermen who were its first settlers and also, very uniquely, about its animals that are as much a part of Ko Samui culture and tradition. About 1500 years ago, Ko Samui came to be inhabited by several fishermen. Ko Samui found its way into 500-year-old maps of the Chinese Ming dynasty, suggesting that trade routes had been charted with the Chinese.

koh samui thailandCoconut production and fishing were the island's means of livelihood. The island's interactivity with neighboring Bangkok and different islands soon brought the island into the main circuit and opened it up as a major tourist attraction in Thailand.
What makes the history of Ko Samui so interesting is the role played by the monkeys in coconut harvesting. Monkeys romped all the way up the coconut trees and threw down coconuts, making the collection of coconuts easier and faster. This feat is a major tourist attraction. An integral part of the Ko Samui culture is the role of buffaloes. Buffaloes, which were used both as beasts of burden and a source of meat are engaged in mock-fights. Buffalo fighting evolved into a conventional sport and has proven to be a major tourist attraction as well. Visit Ko Samui to acquaint yourself with a culture that's unique and a land that's nothing short of a paradise.

How about Thailand Travel 2009

How about Thailand Travel by 2009 : Thailand Tourism information for tourist.

Bangkok: Back to normal today
BANGKOK, Thailand (eTN) - After four days of rising violence and confrontation, tensions cooled down in Bangkok on Tuesday morning as the "red shirts" retreated following orders from their leaders to disperse. On Monday night, a little of 2,000 protesters were still standing in front of the Government House but started to retreat on Tuesday. The government has already organized buses to repatriate red shirt protesters to Northern and Northeastern provinces.
The confrontation between the red shirts who are supporters of ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and government forces --army and police- translated into a relatively low number of casualties. The government officially announced many 110 people injured and three killed, due to casualties between red shirts and Bangkok local residents.

According to Lutzi Matzig from Asian Trails, casualties did not affect tourists visiting the capital. Tours continued to the Royal Palace, the Floating Market or to River Kwai. Despite the seizure of over 50 public buses by protesters, other public transport e.g. the Skytrain and the Underground continued to work normally over the last days. On Tuesday, rail services resumed partially their services from Bangkok Hua Lamphong station to the North and Northeastern. All shopping malls opened as usual.
If Bangkok's life's returning rapidly to normal, the last violence'll certainly affect Thailand's tourism image again with a achievable drop from Asian travelers to the Thai capital over the next few weeks. Many governments around the world, including the USA, China, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines and the European Union have issued travel warning to Bangkok. They are expected to be lifted rapidly.
The best news probably for many Bangkok residents: the government asked public services to eventually extend the Songkran holiday --Thai New Year- beyond Wednesday.
The government advised business companies to eventually do the same to help cleaning and repairing harm done to some public infrastructure in Bangkok. At least, many inhabitants might enjoy this free week of holiday offered by the government.

In Muay Thai, the boxer will always preface the fight with Wai Kru and this tradition is still practised nowadays. This ceremony is usually performed to rousing Thai music from pipes and drums, and with the initial Ram Muay (the boxing movement). The Wai Kru & Ram Muay are useful, since the Boxer gains encouragement from paying homage to his Teachers and feels that he is not on his own: he has his Teacher & the other Teachers of the Muay Thai discipline to support him.

The Wai Kru process will also give him time to concentrate & revise what he has learned, as well as display the nature of his weapons and the high degree of his skill. The steps, movements & use of his weapons are designed to warm up the body’s muscles, survey the field of play & conceal the contestant’s style of fighting. When the traditional Sarama music sounds around the ring it is recognised by all who are present as a symbol of deference & respect. Prior to the fight, the music helps to urge the fighter on, and rouses his spirit until he is ready to face his opponent in the boxing ring in manly combat.

Thinking of Thailand as a tour destination? Think exotic, oriental, majestic and more!

Thailand’s boundaries stretch to neighboring regions of Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Gulf of Thailand and the Indian Ocean. The exciting Eastern city of Thailand offers immense scope for sea, air and road travel, the holiday plan usually dependent on a tourist’s budget. Its four main regions, namely North, Central Plain or the Chao Phraya River Basin, North East (Korat Plateau) and South Peninsula live up to the true meaning of ‘thai,’ literally meaning free and denoting the same in its multicultural diversity that happily coexists with its diverse inhabitants.

Agriculturally rich, with paddy fields dotted landscape that make room for heritage palaces and famous temples alike, modern Thailand comes as a pleasant surprise for the global traveler: natural beauty of many beaches and islands, innumerable shopping bargains and vibrant festivities of carnivals and shopping centers that offer wide variety in local foods and gourmet cuisine, exotic hill - tribe villages and ancient ruins all contribute to Thailand’s cosmopolitan air as a tour destination.

Thailand as a tour destination: its many exciting activities and pleasures.

Buddhism is the main religion in Thailand with the King of Thailand revered as the supreme monarch and also the patron of all religions embraced by the people. Thus, Thailand has religious tolerance woven into its social fabric and respects people of all races. This multiculturalism makes Thailand a hot favorite as a tour destination for the global traveler with add-on visits to nearby cities like Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Butterworth and other major southern Thai towns being part of an avid tourist’s list. Places of tourist interest in Thailand include Phuket, Koh Samui, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Koh Chang and Koh Samet while provinces like Krabi, Koh Libong, Koh Hai provides great photographic memoirs of Thailand as a tour destination.

Songkran Festival in mid April

In Thailand, as also in the Dai People communities of Southern China [ where the Tai originated from ], the Tai Lao in Laos, and the Buddhist communities in Cambodia and Myanmar, the Calender New Year is occassioned between 13 and 15 April each year. The Thai use a lunisolar calendar [ both the Sun rotation and the moon phase rotation ] and the date was fixed on a solar calculation. The word '' Songkran '' is derived from the Indian sancript word '' Sankanta '' which means '' a change or move ''. The dates are now fixed arbitarily but originally would move with the move of the sun on the vernal equinox. This occured as a consequence of '' precession '' and the tilt of the earth and the effect of its orbit. Over the past the dates have changed but are now fixed irrespective of the original rationale and what would otherwise be the astrological calculation. From a natural perspective the dates also signal the end of the dry season.

Loy Krathong Festival

Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated in all of Thailand in November. Loy Krathong celebrates the end of the rainy season which is also the full moon of the 12 th month of the Thai Lunar Calendar. Loy or Loi means to float and Krathong or Kratong means a raft the sive of ones open hand. The point of the festival is to prepare and then float at full moon down a stream, river or other water water, an elaborately prepared offering on the raft to be released and float away by water to release with it as a symbolic gester, ones bad feelings, anger, stress and grievances.

The festival has its beginnings in the Indianisation process of South East Asia and an original Brahmanical festival from Northern India. Many Thais also accept natural forces as spirits or '' gods '' and the floating of the Krathong is symbolic gesture to the Goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. The Thais proclaim the festival originated in Thailand at Sukhothai at the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom, but here then also Indian and Brahmanical influences with powerful.

Bai Sri

The Bai Sri is a blessing ceremony performed to bestow happiness and prosperity to a person or place. The ceremony features a beautifully-shaped ornament called a khrueng bai sri ton, made of elaborately-folded banana leaves. A container is beautifully decorated with fresh flowers and banana leaves, It is often used during auspicious ceremonies. The popular forms of the Bai Sri offerings are the Bai Sri Pak Cham and Bai Sri Yai.

Bai Sri Pak Cham is small and looks like a bowl. A section of banana trunk can be used to make this form of Bai Sri, which is often used in a ceremony to worship deities and in a ceremony to pay homage to teachers. Bai Sri Yai is generally used in significant events, such as a royal ceremony to strengthen the royal Khwan. According to ancient traditions, a nine-tier Bai Sri is for the King and the Queen, a seven-tier Bai Sri is for a prince or a princess, a five-tier Bai Sri is for the royal guest with the status of a president, a three-tier Bai Sri is for a minister or for use in the wedding of a royal grandchild.

Bai Sri rituals are often performed in Chiang Mai. Thai people preserve this rite as a legacy for future generations. You will find different kinds of Bai Sri Pak Cham at Tom Lamyai Flower Market, Vichayanun rd, Chiang Mai.

Thailand (heart of Asia) Holidays

HEART OF ASIA
One of the world's most popular cuisines. beautiful beaches & islands. Friendly, charming people. Warm weather all year round. Cheap prices for most things. Colourful, enchanting temples. An exotic culture preserved through the ages in a country that has never been colonised. Where are they talking about? Thailand, of coursework!

WHY THAILAND
You can travel to Thailand, if you require to experience lovely smiles & gentleness of Thai people & scenic & cultural treasures of Thai land. Thailand certainly is the “land of smiles,” which can make you smirk, too. It’s really is enamoring & exotic country, known for its inviting people, culture, scenery, cuisine, & overall lifestyle.

VACATIONS, MADE MEMORABLE ONES
Arguably the most exotic location in South East Asia, Thailand offers travelers & holidaymakers a huge range of holiday possibilities. It doesn't matter whether you're a budget traveler wanting to explore a foreign land on a tight budget, or a well-heeled traveler who wants to be pampered & experience the best, Thailand has something for you.It is still possible to find a pristine stretch of beautiful white sand beach that you can have all to yourself. Lazing away the days on a hammock under a palm tree on a mile long beach, without someone else in sight, swaying in the breeze under a cloudless sky as the waves gently break against the soft white sand.Such an experience can still be had. Welcome to Thailand!

MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS
This page could largely be separated into one separate sections. The first part gives general information about travelling in Thailand while the second part goes into detail about a number of the places to visit & a number of my feelings about them & experiences there.

LANDING IN THAILAND
Most people arriving in Thailand fly into Suwannaphum international airport in Bangkok. Your first time in Thailand, which may be your first time in Asia, can be over a little confusing. you are over likely jumping off the plane after a lengthy trip & probably require to get to your hotel as shortly as possible.

LEGAL LENGTH FOR YOUR STAY IN THAILAND
Visitors from most Western countries to Thailand get 30 days permission to enter Thailand upon arrival. This is not a visa per se. If you really like Thailand you can exit the country & re-enter immediately thus getting another 30 days. You cannot do this indefinitely & after spending 90 days in Thailand in a 180 day period you cannot return for 90 days, unless you apply for a visa at a Thai embassy or consulate outside of the country first. (There is more on the whole visa issue in the living & working section.) Holders of South Korean, Brazilian & Peruvian passports get 90 days permission. A lot of developing countries get permission to enter for a shorter period of time & visitors from some countries may have to apply in advance for a visa. You can apply in advance for a one month tourist visa which can actually be extended in the country for another 30 days at any Immigration office. The extension costs 1,900 baht.I believe that you may be able to get a multiple entry tourist visa although I personally believe that strictly for tourism purposes, five months is plenty.

ACCOMMODATION
No matter what your budget, you can find something to suit. Thailand & indeed Bangkok has a huge range of places to stay. Whether you require the opulence of the Oriental Hotel, the filth of a Khao Sarn Road backpacker hole or somewhere in between, you will be able to find it in Bangkok. & right throughout Thailand, you will be able to find something to suit your needs, at least most of the time in most places.Bangkok's top end hotels continue to rate highly. The Oriental Hotel, The Dusit Thani, The Peninsula & The Shangri-La are often mentioned when you hear the top hotels in the world being talked about. These are five star hotels in every sense & should suit the most demanding of travelers Throughout Thailand, you have all of the big international hotel chains like Marriot, Sheraton, Regent, Hyatt represented. You also have some nice Thai hotel chains like Amari. & then you have got a lot of stand alone hotels. At the lower end of the range you have guesthouses. I gather that camping grounds are available in some places but having seen one snake show too lots of, I think I'll give that one a miss, thank you.Of the beaches & islands in Thailand, the most popular spots like Pattaya, Phuket & Ko Samui are oozing with a variety of accommodation options. But this is not always the case at a number of the more off the beaten track type places. It should come as no surprise that the further off the beaten track you get, generally the harder it is to find quality accommodation. Even in a number of the islands the quality of accommodation is not always that nice - & sometimes the prices, while cheap by international standards, can be pricey by local Thai standards. Places like Ko Samet & Ko Chang are classic examples where, in my personal opinion, accommodation prices really are higher than they should be.

Khao San Road
If you're travelling on a budget then Khao San Road is actually well located for someone visiting Bangkok as it is walking distance to the river & the most interesting & historically significant parts of the city. The must see Grand Palace is about a mile or s away, easily walk able, even in Bangkok's oppressive heat. Thailand is not an pricey country to travel through & if you are on a real budget, you can do fine. Let's look at the cost of accommodation in Bangkok first. A room in the top end hotels tends to go for 5,000 baht or more a night. The best spots, like the Oriental may even go for one times this. As I mentioned earlier, hotels in Bangkok really are excellent & the top end places are fabulous. My pick is the Sukhothai which has a wonderful combination of Thai style with modern convenience. it is worth going for a wander through as it really is that nice! As Bangkok can be difficult to get around due to the terrible traffic conditions & the fact that the skytrain & underground only cover a small part of the city, one needs to think carefully about the area where one chooses to stay. The most popular areas are Sukhumvit Road, Silom Road, the Siam Square / Pratunam area, Banglampoo & the river The prices of ccommodation in Phuket & Ko Samui are much the same as in Bangkok. These are now big international beach resorts with lots of fabulous places to stay & as such the prices reflect what people are prepared to pay for them. On the other hand, Pattaya & Chiang Mai both have high quality accommodation available at prices which simply do not exist - at least what you get for that money - in Bangkok. This is one reason to visit Pattaya & Chiang Mai - you get nice value for money on your accommodation.

GETTING AROUND THAILAND

TRAVEL BY AIR
Thai Airways is the main domestic airline & airfares for flights within Thailand are reasonably priced, the schedules are nice with lots of flights to the most popular destinations. Further, the planes are generally in nice condition. Thai Airways flies to most parts of the country, but not all. The notable exception of where Thai does not fly is the tropical paradise of Ko Samui. there is only one airline which flies between Ko Samui & Bangkok & that is Bangkok Airways who I believe own the airport at Samui. The fare to fly from Bangkok to Ko Samui on Bangkok Airways is more pricey than the fare on Thai to fly from Bangkok to Phuket, something which lots of people query, with some feeling that Bangkok Airways really stings you when you fly between Bangkok & Ko Samui. Bangkok Airways also flies to some neighbouring countries as well as operating domestic flights within Thailand, but it is the route to Ko Samui for which they are most famous. Bangkok Airways has tried to reposition themselves & now markets themselves as Asia's boutique carrier. .

TRAVEL BY CAR
Hiring cars or even a big bicycle is one way to get around Thailand. The quality of the roads in Thailand is generally lovely. automobile rental is cheap in Thailand which is a little surprising given that the cost of buying a automobile in Thailand is much dearer than in the West. Generally, driving in provincial Thailand is easy, the drivers are less aggressive, there is much less traffic - & the further you get from Bangkok, the less traffic & congestion you find. However, wherever you go, signs are generally in Thai only. In a few places, & Pattaya is one exception, some road signs are in Thai. Fortunately street signs are in both Thai & English nationwide, something which I have been impressed with. Petrol in Thailand is reasonably priced & as at March 2007, the price is around 26 baht a litre for the highest grade, 95 octane petrol.

HIGH-LOW SEASONS, THERE’S NONE SO SERIOUS DIVISIONS:
The tourist high season runs from around late November through to mid April. At certain times, Christmas, New Year, the Chinese New Year & Songkran the most popular beaches & islands can be busy to the point that getting accommodation can become a bit of a problem. Hotels & even some guesthouses hike their prices - & people are willing to pay it. So if you are travelling over any of these periods it pays to book well in advance. The Songkran period really marks the end of the tourism high season for the year. there's a quantity of other holidays throughout the year & on a number of these holidays nightlife areas & bars & discos can be closed - & the sale of alcohol is outlawed. Some bars slip the boys in brown a bit of money so they can remain open. Generally speaking it is the Buddhist holidays & December 5th, the birthday of HM The King.
